About Arp

Arp is a city in Smith County with 892 residents in the 2020 census (Wikipedia: Arp, Texas). The settlement was called Bissa, from a Choctaw and Chickasaw word for blackberry, then Jarvis Junction, then Strawberry for the fruit grown there. It was finally renamed for Bill Arp, the pen name of Georgia humorist Charles Henry Smith; the short name was reportedly handy for growers who hand-marked their strawberry crates.

Older systems

Older homes in small towns often keep their equipment a long time. Systems that use R-22 refrigerant are increasingly hard to recharge because it is no longer produced for new use (U.S. EPA, refrigerant management (Section 608)). See the repair-or-replace guide.

Manufactured homes

Manufactured homes use equipment and ducts designed for them, often with ducts under the floor. Crushed or disconnected belly ducts are a common cause of weak airflow and high bills. The DOE's Energy Saver pages cover duct sealing and efficiency for all home types (U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Saver heating and cooling).

Planning ahead

In rural areas, a failure in peak season can take time to address. A spring cooling check and fall heating check reduce the chance of a breakdown in the worst weather.

Nearby

Whitehouse and Tyler are to the west, Troup is south and Kilgore is to the northeast.
