Heating and Cooling in Kilgore

Kilgore boomed with the East Texas oil field in the 1930s, and much of its housing dates from that era and the decades after. Older homes with retrofitted systems sit alongside newer neighborhoods on the edges of town.

About Kilgore

Kilgore is a city in Gregg and Rusk counties where I-20 and U.S. 259 meet, south of the Sabine River, with 13,376 residents in the 2020 census (Wikipedia: Kilgore, Texas). It was founded in 1872 on land the International-Great Northern Railroad bought from Constantine Buckley Kilgore. After the 1930 discovery of the East Texas Oil Field nearby, Kilgore became a boomtown; by 1936 its population topped 12,000 and its skyline was crowded with derricks.

Boom-era and mid-century homes

Homes from the oil boom and the decades after often have systems retrofitted into small attics or crawlspaces, with ducts that are undersized by current standards. Weak airflow and uneven rooms are common. See ductwork and airflow.

Efficiency upgrades

Replacing an older system with ENERGY STAR equipment can cut energy use (ENERGY STAR, heating and cooling), but only if the ducts and sizing are right. Ask for a load calculation instead of a size copied from the old unit.

Checking contractors

TDLR's online lookup confirms whether an air conditioning contractor holds a Texas license (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, air conditioning and refrigeration contractors). Inside city limits, check with the City of Kilgore about permits.

Nearby

Lindale is west along I-20, Tyler is to the southwest, and Arp and Troup are south and southwest.
