About Noonday

Noonday is a city in Smith County with 612 residents in the 2020 census (Wikipedia: Noonday, Texas). It is best known for the Noonday onion, which must be grown within ten miles of Noonday to carry the name, and the Noonday Onion Festival held each May. The area was settled by the 1860s, and a post office opened in 1880. The census counts the city as entirely rural.

Propane, electric or heat pump?

Outside natural gas service areas, homes heat with propane furnaces, electric furnaces or heat pumps. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that heat pumps can deliver more heat than the electricity they use in moderate climates (U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Saver (heat pumps)). For homes now on electric strip heat, a heat pump can be worth comparing at replacement time.

Carbon monoxide

Propane furnaces, like natural gas furnaces, need proper venting. The CPSC recommends CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, carbon monoxide).

Older residents

With an older median age than many nearby towns, Noonday households include many retirees. Heat and cold both hit older adults hard, so having a plan for a failed system during a heat wave or cold snap matters. See the summer AC checklist.
