About Jacksonville

Jacksonville is a city in Cherokee County with 13,997 residents in the 2020 census, and the principal city of the Jacksonville micropolitan area (Wikipedia: Jacksonville, Texas). It began in 1847 as Gum Creek; the townsite was laid out in 1850 and named for blacksmith and postmaster Jackson Smith and Dr. William Jackson. Tomato growing and shipping earned it the title "Tomato Capital of the World," and the Tomato Bowl stadium, built of red iron ore rock by WPA workers, still hosts high school games.

Older neighborhoods

Older homes near downtown often have systems and ducts added after construction. Comfort problems in these houses usually trace back to duct layout, insulation and air leaks. The DOE's Energy Saver pages explain how insulation and air sealing work with heating and cooling (U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Saver heating and cooling).

Lake and weekend homes

Homes near the lakes in the area may sit unused for stretches. Humidity can build in closed-up houses in summer; a thermostat setting that keeps the AC cycling enough to dehumidify helps. See the humidity guide.

Consumer tips

The Texas Attorney General publishes consumer protection guidance on contracts and home services (Texas Attorney General, consumer protection). Inside city limits, check with the City of Jacksonville about permits.

Nearby

Bullard is north on U.S. 69, Flint and Tyler lie beyond it, and Troup is northeast on Highway 135.
