About Bullard

Bullard is a town in Smith and Cherokee counties where U.S. 69 meets several farm-to-market roads, about 15 miles south of Tyler (Wikipedia: Bullard, Texas). It had 3,318 residents in the 2020 census, up from 2,463 in 2010. The town is named for John H. Bullard, who opened a post office in his store in 1881, and grew after a railroad line from Tyler to Lufkin came through and built a depot here. Most residents commute to Tyler for work.

Two-story comfort

Larger two-story homes often have one system serving both floors, and the upstairs runs warm in summer. Options include duct and return improvements, zoning with dampers, or a separate upstairs system. ENERGY STAR's guidance on duct sealing is a good starting point (ENERGY STAR, heating and cooling). See ductwork and airflow.

Growing families, growing loads

Game rooms, home offices and converted garages add heat and change how a house uses air. Adding a room to an existing system without checking capacity often leaves it short. A load calculation answers the question.

Checking contractors

TDLR's online lookup shows whether an air conditioning contractor holds a Texas license (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, air conditioning and refrigeration contractors). Inside town limits, check with the City of Bullard about permits.

Asked and answered

HVAC questions from Bullard

  1. Why is my upstairs hotter than downstairs?

Rising heat, hot attics and long duct runs. Zoning, duct work or a second system can help.

  2. Can I add a converted garage to my existing system?

Sometimes. A load calculation shows whether the system has room; a ductless unit is another option.

  3. Which county is Bullard in?

    Both Smith and Cherokee counties.
