Repair or Replace Your AC?

When an older air conditioner breaks down in an East Texas summer, the repair-or-replace question comes up fast. Here are the factors that usually decide it, so the choice is not made in a hurry on a hot afternoon.

Factors that point to repair

  • The system is relatively young and has been reliable.
  • The failed part is a common, inexpensive one, such as a capacitor, contactor or fan motor.
  • The house is comfortable when the system works.
  • The system uses a current refrigerant.

Factors that point to replacement

  • Age: systems well into their second decade are near the end of a typical service life. ENERGY STAR notes that replacing an older system with qualifying equipment can save energy (ENERGY STAR, heating and cooling).
  • R-22 refrigerant: R-22 is no longer produced for new use under EPA rules (U.S. EPA, refrigerant management (Section 608)), so refrigerant repairs on these systems rely on limited supply.
  • Major component failure: a failed compressor or a leaking indoor coil on an older system.
  • Repeated repairs: several breakdowns in a few seasons.
  • Comfort problems: rooms that never cool, high humidity or high bills even when it works.

Find the model labels

The data plates on the outdoor and indoor units list the model, serial number, refrigerant type and, through the serial number, often the manufacture date. Photograph them before calling.

Efficiency

Federal efficiency standards were raised in 2023 and now use SEER2 ratings, with higher minimums in Southern states including Texas. The U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Saver pages explain how efficiency ratings relate to operating costs (U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Saver heating and cooling). The jump from a very old system to a new one can be large.

Do not decide in a rush

A breakdown in July can make any offer sound urgent. If the system can be safely repaired to get through the season, that can buy time to compare replacement estimates properly. The Texas Attorney General publishes consumer protection guidance on contracts and home services (Texas Attorney General, consumer protection).

If you replace

  • Insist on a load calculation, not a copy of the old size.
  • Match the indoor coil to the new outdoor unit.
  • Have the ducts inspected.
  • Compare estimates with the same capacity, efficiency and scope.

Asked and answered

Short answers

  1. How long does a central AC last?

Many last well over a decade with maintenance. Heavy use and skipped maintenance shorten it.

  2. Is it worth repairing an R-22 system?

Minor non-refrigerant repairs can make sense. Repairs that need much refrigerant often push toward replacement.

  3. Can I replace just the outdoor unit?

It is usually better to replace the indoor coil too so the system is matched and uses the same refrigerant.

  4. How do I find my system's age?

The serial number on the data plate often encodes the manufacture date. The manufacturer can decode it.
