About Troup

Troup is a city in Smith and Cherokee counties with 2,006 residents in the 2020 census (Wikipedia: Troup, Texas). It grew as a railroad town after the International Railroad opened its line through the area in 1872 and was platted in 1873. State Highway 110 runs northwest about 19 miles to Tyler, and Highway 135 leads to Kilgore and Jacksonville; the two share Duval Street downtown.

Older homes in town

Homes near downtown may have older gas furnaces and ducts added long after construction. Older furnaces deserve a careful look at venting and the heat exchanger, and every home with gas appliances should have carbon monoxide alarms, as the CPSC recommends (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, carbon monoxide).

Younger households

Troup has a relatively young median age, and many families are in homes where the system is now 10 to 20 years old. Regular maintenance, following ENERGY STAR's checklist (ENERGY STAR, heating and cooling), helps those systems last and catches small problems before peak season.

Planning for heat waves and cold snaps

In a smaller town, a system failure during a heat wave or freeze is harder to wait out. A fall heating check and a spring cooling check are the simplest insurance. See the cold snap guide.

Nearby

Arp is north, Whitehouse is northwest toward Tyler, Jacksonville is southwest on Highway 135 and Kilgore is northeast.
